Title: Bari and the Breakaways
Post by: Kiwigold on April 05, 2008, 06:06:00 pm
I just read that Bari died at the age of 22 !!  :o

Bruce Sergent's site says that "Bari originally started out playing in his father's band in 1961 before moving to a local Stratford band called the Crescendos"
Does anyone know the name of Bari's father's band ? and the groups which Bari was in ?

Bari also ran a night club and had been working as a promoter, all this within approx. an 8 year period.
He appeared to be a huge talent, what would he have achieved if life had not been so cruel.

When I came to Taranaki to start the new outfit that would become Bari & the Breakaways, he and Dave Orams,(the eventual bass player) were in a dance band called "The Nightlights." Sat nights at the sports hall I think it was.
Bari's Dad's Band? Cant help sorry.

That band The Nitelights played at the Stratford War Memorial Hall on Saturday nights for what seemed like years. They later changed their name to The Nevadas. Both of these bands were the main dance band of the time in Taranaki

Jez Grudly, I wish I had been older when you guy's were in Masterton, my Mum remembers you though.  ;D

I think I have mentioned this before, this is a very good site, flick through some of the links.

Bari and the Breakaways .... was a damn nice find !

Grudly, I had never heard Despair before, that's a hell of a nice song.

I notice you co-wrote it with Dave Orams.

Wow, you got lucky. Yea Dave and I wrote "despair" while on a break from touring.
Did it at his parents house in New Plymouth on their piano. We had been discussing pianist Floyd Cramer and Dave came up with this little hook and away we went.
Needed another verse but I couldn't think of one.

I finally managed to track a CD copy of the two albums down remarkably from a place in Victoria Australia called vinyl solutions and received it today. Have only managed a quick listen so far but some really good stuff. Grudly did you guys play at a Mardi Gra in Lower Hutt way back probably mid 60s All of the High Street was sectioned off and I remember seeing Roadrunners, Bitter End, Tom Thumb and I think Bari and the Breakaways.Plus others  It was the first bands I had ever been able to go and see Being such a long time ago the memory is a little hazy. But it was a brilliant night and set me off on following local bands

Tough Enough was written by Johnny Otis, as was the B side to the single Mumblin' Mosie.
The single also included the Mike Sammes Singers.

Got this from one of two Box Sets which wifey has of Cliff Richard.
This was from the "Cliff Richard The Rock 'N' Roll Years 1958 - 1963" a very nice Box Set too !

Grudly, did you release anything when you went solo ? and also when you formed Dixie Express ?

Cheers.

Grudly, when you guy's played in Masterton, can you remember the venue(s) ?

Thanks.

Neil Francis (registered here as kiwibass) works at the Wairarapa Archives here in Masterton, because you guy's were so popular here there may be something at the archives, might pay a visit.

No never did a solo recording. Dixie Express did not record either as by this time, you had to pay for it youself >:( Marsterton. We only did Johny Coopers talent quests in the town hall?( I think it was.) No dance dates although I recall we did do one in Carterton. Don't know the hall but it was packed. It was a friday night.

I didn't know Bryan but I am impressed with the extent of his writings re "musical memories".

These first hand accounts are magic stuff, and for me give rare insight into the era that was just before mine.

Good on him for doing so.

I agree, absolutely superb ! and what a memory.

Grudly himself mentioned a while back here (http://nzmusic60s70s.smfforfree.com/index.php?topic=1658.msg2402#msg2402) ...

If only we could get all these stories from various musos into ONE book!!!
Imagine!!   :o

Wouldn't it be great to see that happen.
