Ngaruawahia Festival 1973 -- Anyone remember Itambu ? They played 2 sets (Sat./Sun.) I remember them opening their set with that old classic "Who Do You Love" sung by the Bass Player IIRC - they did a ballad in the middle of their set called ( I think ) "Shelly" and also a piece called "Rape of the Chocolate Cookies" - but thats about all I can recall song wise.
Reggie Ruka on Vocals, Perter Timperley on guitar, Rick Brewer ( ex Zoot ) on Drums and a Bass Player ( probably an Aussie ) who's name escapes me.
They also opened for the Rolling Stones in Auckland.
Powerful Band

Yep -- I've seen these awhile ago. Great photo's from some great times.
I wish that there was some stuff recorded of this fine band.
These were taken on the Saturday night's performance of Itambu ( I'm pretty sure )
As the guitarist ( Peter Timperley ) on that night was wearing red trousers IIRC.
"For the fashion conscious",  - On the Sunday night they played again and I think he was maybe wearing regular blue jeans.
Reggie Ruka I think wore the same outfit on both nights.
The music was good too !!
I reckon they played again on the Sunday night to fill in the vacant slot that should have featured TICKET.

Not sure how much you know about the guy's Mark, Reggie Ruka and Peter Timperley were both with the band Classic Affair.
Reggie Ruka moved over to Aus. and changed his name to Andre Santos, then joined the band Mississippi for a short time, before coming back to New Zealand and forming the Ruka Brothers.
.... I wonder if that was with the Ruka boy's from the Hi-Marks ?
Peter Timperley later went on to join the Dallas Four, Karma and Uncle Remus.

Yep - I knew most of that except the bit about the Ruka Brothers.
Reggie Ruka was also in a  band in Aus, called Everton Park.
I have a track on a compilation CD with a couple of Everton Park tracks one of which has
a Ruka writing credit.

Hey,I didn't even know Itambu were a Kiwi band till this minute. However I did see them many times in the early to mid 70's in Australia&remember them as one of the few bands that attracted me from this corner of Terra, apart from Thorpie,Band of Light& Buffalo. They played the milesago festival at Bungool,A Bondi beach day of different bands performing&many other gig's around OZ. I really liked the heavier than usual sound they put out as we were moving to bubblegum overhere&that wasn't even worth listening too. Now I know they had Zoots influence I understand why I liked them so much,as the Zoot's version of Elenor Rigby was over the top! Thanks to all who offered their information on Itambu Smiley
